Historic Crafers stone home built in the 1880s hits the South Australian real estate market

A GRAND stone home at Crafers offers a blissful lifestyle and a private escape from the rush of busy city life, vendor Chris says..

“It’s a lifestyle thing, my wife loves to be able to entertain up there or let the kids kick the soccer ball around, you are away from everything, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and you are only 20 minutes, away but you could be in another country,” he says.

“You are in complete privacy and you can just enjoy life, turn off and get away from everything when you are there.”

The home, which was built by politician Sir William Milne in the 1880s and was owned by the Bonython family for 70 years, was damaged in the 1980 bushfires and was restored based on the original plans.

“When the property burnt down they knocked off the top storey,” Chris says.

“We lived in the house like that until 2007 and we rebuilt the top storey again ... we found the original floorplans in the Victorian Art Gallery.

“We were even able to get the staircase balustrades back to what they were originally.”

The main stone residence has five bedrooms, with the master on the first floor featuring a walk-in robe and an ensuite.

Bedrooms two and three are on the same level, and they have built-in robes and are serviced by a bathroom that has a bath and a shower.

There are two more bedrooms on the lower ground level, and the property also has a studio in the attic, and a study that could be used as additional bedrooms.

The ground floor is taken up by formal living rooms, including a dining room, and a sitting room, both with ornate fireplaces.

“It has a formality about it ... it suits all types of living, it’s not a house that is set for any particular style of living,” Chris says.

Towards the back of the home there is a kitchen with a conservatory/meals area adjacent.

The kitchen features an Aga stove, an island bench with a breakfast bar, and a butler’s pantry.

There are also two bathrooms on the ground floor, and the home is surrounded by a veranda.

The property also has multiple store rooms, a laundry, and three cellars.

Detached from the home there is a gate house, which has two bedrooms, a kitchen, two living rooms and a bathroom, and there is also a stable and a tennis court.

“I love the property, I love the garden, I love the view of the Piccadilly Valley, it’s a glorious view to have to wake up to in the morning, it’s wonderful,” he says.

“I saw the potential to restore it, I looked at the photographs and thought ‘one day I can do this’ ... we achieved what we wanted to do.”
