Chris Jericho calls WrestleMania 18 main event match with Triple H 'disappointing' - says it should

Back in 2001 when WWE presented the Unforgiven pay-per-view, few fans expected Chris Jericho to be the man to emerge as the first-ever Undisputed world champion.

After beating both The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in the same night - that's probably the biggest endorsement in wrestling history - Y2J ascended to the very top of the business.

Two months later, Triple H returned to the WWE after nine months out with a torn quadricep - an injury he suffered in a match featuring Jericho on Raw - and he won the 2002 Royal Rumble.

That set up a date with Jericho at WrestleMania 18, a match that would be Jericho's first-ever WrestleMania main event match.

However, most people recall WrestleMania 18 as being the stage that saw The Rock battle Hulk Hogan.

During an interview with Inside The Ropes, Jericho explained how disappointing his main event match ended up being. Thanks to Wrestling Inc for the words.

"Let’s be honest, [it was] a main event in the fact that it was on last, but the main event of the show was Hogan and Rock and I knew it. And it was actually most of the people pitching to have their match on last. I was pitching [for Triple H and I] not to go on last because I said, ‘How do you follow Hogan and Rock?’ And Triple H, and probably rightfully so, was fighting for the title match to be last but we couldn’t follow it. We just couldn’t and you could just see the air go out of the room. That’s a match, I’ve never watched it back I remember being kind of disappointed in it. Main event at WrestleMania?

"It was more of a forgotten thing, so, the buildup for the [WrestleMania]match wasn’t great, the positioning of the match wasn’t great, and in my opinion, the match wasn’t great, but, I can say I was in the main event of WrestleMania, so, there you go."

Jericho, 48, has recently signed with All Elite Wrestling to end his near 20-year relationship with the WWE and he'll be leading AEW's charge to become a legitimate rival to his former employers.

Triple H, on the other hand, is the heir to Vince McMahon's throne in the WWE and is the genius behind NXT.
